Mrs. Chen never told me what to read. She’d just slide books across the circulation desk with this look that said “trust me on this one.” I was fourteen and convinced I was supposed to read Important Literature with capital letters. She handed me a cookbook written by a physicist and a comic book about financial markets. Then she watched me puzzle over why someone would pair those with Steinbeck.

“Information doesn’t live in boxes,” she said when I finally asked. “The interesting stuff happens in the spaces between.” She was reorganizing the entire library system at the time, creating these weird cross-reference sections that made no logical sense. Poetry next to car repair manuals. Astronomy mixed with ancient philosophy. The other librarians thought she’d lost it.

Tony ran the shop where my dad took our eternally dying Honda. I was maybe sixteen, sitting in the waiting room pretending to do homework while secretly watching Tony explain problems to customers. He never talked down to anyone, but he also never pretended things were simpler than they were.
“See, the thing is,” he’d say, wiping his hands on a rag, “your car’s like your body. Everything’s connected. You can’t fix the symptom and ignore what caused it.” Then he’d walk people through the actual problem, using parts and diagrams, until they understood not just what was broken but why it broke.
I started hanging around after school, partly to avoid going home, partly because Tony’s explanations were better than any science class I’d taken. He taught me to see systems instead of isolated parts. When something failed, you didn’t just replace it. You figured out what stress or neglect led to the failure in the first place.
This completely rewired how I think about problems. In writing, in relationships, in career decisions. When something isn’t working, I don’t just swap in a quick fix. I trace back through the system to find where the real issue started. Tony’s approach to engines became my approach to everything else. The Professor Who Embraced Being Wrong
Dr. Martinez taught introductory philosophy, which should have been the most intimidating class on my schedule. Instead, she made it the most freeing. She started every semester with the same announcement: “I’m going to be wrong about half the things I say this year. Your job is to catch me at it.”
She meant it. Students would challenge her interpretations of Kant or point out contradictions in her arguments about ethics, and she’d light up like Christmas morning. “Yes! Exactly! Now let’s figure out where my thinking went off the rails.” She’d work through her mistakes in real time, showing us how to build better arguments from the wreckage of worse ones.
Most of my teachers had presented knowledge like a finished monument you were supposed to admire and memorize. Dr. Martinez treated it like a construction site where we were all part of the crew. She modeled intellectual honesty in a way that made being wrong feel productive instead of shameful.
I carry this with me every day now. When someone points out a flaw in my reasoning or catches an error in something I’ve written, I try to channel her excitement instead of getting defensive. Being wrong isn’t a failure of intelligence. It’s raw material for being smarter next time. The people who can’t admit mistakes stop learning. The people who celebrate them keep growing.
The Neighbor Who Noticed Everything
Mr. Park lived three houses down and somehow knew the entire neighborhood’s business without being nosy about it. He just paid attention. He’d mention that the Johnsons’ sprinkler was hitting their roses wrong, or ask if I’d noticed the new family’s kid seemed lonely at the bus stop. Nothing dramatic, just small observations that showed he was actually seeing what was in front of him.
He taught me that paying attention is a skill you have to practice. “Most people look but don’t see,” he’d say while we worked in his garden. “They’re too busy thinking about the next thing to notice what’s happening right now.” He’d point out how the light changed throughout the day, or how different birds preferred different parts of his yard, or why some plants thrived in spots where others failed.
This sounds simple, but it’s revolutionary when you actually do it. I started noticing patterns in conversations, reading the subtext in emails, picking up on the small signals that reveal how people are really feeling. Mr. Park’s brand of attention made me a better friend, a better writer, and honestly a better human.
The weird thing is, I’m still figuring out how these four people connect to each other and to who I’ve become. Mrs. Chen’s sideways reading, Tony’s systems thinking, Dr. Martinez’s intellectual humility, Mr. Park’s careful attention. They feel like puzzle pieces that don’t quite fit together yet, but I can sense the shape they’re trying to make.
